The announcement of New World Mac OS X made a big splash because, with the size of Amazon, everyone knew that a project of the highest class was being prepared for release. Before taking on such a difficult task, the game department tried its hand at developing the multiplayer shooter Crucible, which was received by gamers with little enthusiasm. After a first foray into the gaming front, Amazon decided to approach New World production more responsibly. The real masters of the genre were attracted to the development, including Dave Maldonado, who worked as the creative director of World of Warcraft for almost ten years.
The main location in New World Mac OS X is the magical island of Aeternum, a place with classic MMORPG for macOS settings. Full of treasures and unknown magic, this wondrous island has always attracted adventurers and anyone who wanted to get rich quickly. However, the magical mineral found on the island not only gives strength but also changes all living things around it, turning them into monsters. The characters of the players act as a kind of conquistadors who sailed to the island in search of prey. The setting is similar to our world in the 17th century, that is, cold weapons are still in use, but firearms are becoming more and more popular. Thus, in New World, two-handed swords and arquebuses with cannons coexist.
