Endnight Games has done something that would hardly have been believed possible. In a genre as heavily saturated as first-person survival, especially with horror undertones, it’s rare to find unique and immersive survival experiences in 2018. The Forest Mac OS X doesn’t care at all about always looking like the same soup at first. Later you learn to invest your time in exploring the systems that will reveal their true nature and mutate into something terrifying yet fascinating. Whatever your preparation may be, however, expect a quick disillusionment.
The boundless landscape of The Forest Mac OS X is not reduced to a difficult walk by nibbling a few mushrooms or roots here and there. It is an extraordinary survival experience that, in particular, if you are accompanied by a bit of bad luck, can be incredibly brutal in terms of difficulty. The Forest for Mac is an experience that will take you some time to get used to.
However, once you understand that you can do whatever you want, you will end up enjoying and appreciating it. The survival for macOS genre is so crowded that there is very little ground on which to flourish, but The Forest Mac OS X has succeeded. With more refinement and an emphasis on making all systems more consistent and intuitive, starting with the fight itself, The Forest could have aimed even higher. That said, there is a reason it has sold more than five million copies. The focus on executing specific ideas pays off well and its shortcomings are worth getting around tos test a few games – we specify more than one because the death rate is sky-high.
